Battlefields Trip - a fantastic success

Please click for a short feedback on the trip.

62 pupils from Year 9 enjoyed a fantastic two days on the Battlefields trip to Ypres.  Huge thanks to Ms Ingall who arranged the trip and the fantastic history teachers who shared their knowledge.  How lucky the pupils were to have in Mr Townsend a World War one expert – so he really made the stories come to life.

We visited the Flanders Field museum in Ypres and it was humbling to see the suffering undergone not just by the soldiers but also those who lived in the area. Visiting Ypres today it is almost impossible to believe it was completely destroyed by the end of 1918.  Tabby and James did a wonderful job laying the wreath at the Menin Gate ceremony on Tuesday night.

Mr Townsend gave an inspiring history lesson with every one of the pupils lined up in the reconstructed trenches at Hill 62.  The visits to the cemeteries were obviously moving and thought-provoking – the difference between the German cemeteries and those tended by Commonwealth War Graves Commission is startling.  We will be back next year….
