The Charter School

Excellence for All

Announcement on the death of Charter School founding governor, Toby Eckersley MBE

It was with great sadness that we learned of the death of Toby Eckersley last week.

Many of our staff, parents and carers, governors and trustees will have known him in his capacity as local councillor for Village Ward. Toby played an important role in the early days of The Charter School North Dulwich, working across political divides with Tessa Jowell and others to campaign for a much needed, inclusive and academically excellent state school in our local area.

He was a founding governor of the school, serving on the governing body for many years, and he continued to be a real champion of the school and supporter of The Charter Schools Educational Trust after stepping down from this post in 2012. Tributes last week came from political foes and allies alike. They paint a picture of the man who so ably committed himself to working with others to put in place the foundations for the Trust, foundations on which current trustees and staff are now building.

Our condolences go to Toby’s family.
